Adults & Seniors Fall Prevention

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), every year, more than 1.6 million older U.S. adults go to emergency departments for fall-related injuries. Among seniors – ages 65 and over - falls are the leading cause of fractures, hospital admissions for trauma, loss of independence, and injury deaths.

To prevent this, NYU Winthrop Hospital offers many fall prevention programs for older adults. In addition, we partner with organizations that provide services dedicated to keeping you injury free.

Fall Prevention Programs and Events

Four Part Series for Balance Strength

  • Our four part series run for four consecutive weeks for one hour per session.
  • The first class is entitled ‘Risks and Tips’ and presents information on how to stay safe and avoid falls.
  • The next three classes are exercise classes to improve balance and strength.
  • Equipment is provided and classes are held in a safe environment with a registered nurse leading the group.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi involves slow, controlled movements. This is an ancient Chinese form of martial art is known to reduce stress and calm the mind, and also helps restore energy and physical balance. This can be a perfect exercise for seniors helping them improve their balance, posture and flexibility.

Fall Prevention Tips

  • Stay Active – Some older adults develop a fear of falling and become less active and mobile, which puts them at greater risk. Find exercise programs that help you build your balance, strength and flexibility, thus reducing your risk of a fall.

  • Talk to Your Doctor – Share your history of recent falls and ask your doctor to review your prescription and over-the-counter medicines to see if any of them could make you dizzy and put you at greater risk for falls. Ask your doctor for supplements if you have a Vitamin D or Calcium deficiency, which can lead to brittle bones and greater injury from falls.

  • Check Your Vision – Get your vision and hearing checked annually and update your eyeglasses if necessary.

  • Make Your Home Safer – Get rid of items around the house that could make you trip. Install hand rails inside your bathroom as well as along stairways. Secure rugs and improve lighting in your house to help you see better, especially at night. Wear comfortable shoes and ensure steps and walkways are clear of snow or ice in winter before you step outside.
